Southend vs North Uist United

Poor night in front of goal on a soggy night in Daliburgh. Southend 2 North Uist United 0

We started positively on Tuesday evening building play from the back and generating some decent passing moves. Unfortunately these good early moments went unrewarded when Southend were given a really soft penalty which they converted well. Shortly after this we were the creators of our own downfall when a stray pass led to a Southend counter attack which we defended poorly and they managed to get a second against the run of play. Towards the end of the half we were awarded a generous penalty which could’ve made up for the soft one at the other end; but unfortunately we couldn’t convert.

Second half continued in the same way with us the dominant team on the ball but Southend looking dangerous on the counter. We created a good number of opportunities but nothing would nestle in the net for us. With about twenty minutes gone in the half Southend went down to 10 men when one of their players decided to headbutt Ruairidh for no reason. This allowed us to pile guys forward for the remainder of the game to try and get a result. Despite our best efforts; a combination of heroic defending from their back line and goalkeeper plus our inability to convert chances ultimately cost us.

MOTM: There was a number of players that put in a good shift on Tuesday night, however it has to go to Ben Shepherd again. His desire and determination to do what he can for the team really needs commended along with his ability to cover every blade of grass ten times over. It was a real captains performance from the skipper.

Our next game is on Friday night against Eriskay in Paible. Hope to see a strong home crowd!

North Uist United vs Benbecula

Narrow defeat for our first home game of the season; North Uist United 1 Benbecula 2

We had a strong squad going into the game on Friday night and we started the game well. We had the majority of good play however we couldn’t get the final pass or decision correct. Many good attacking opportunities passed us by, with us being consistently wasteful in the final third. Benbecula managed to slot in a really well worked goal close to the end of the half so we went in 1-0 down at the break.

Second half continued in the same way with us playing well in spells but not managing to capitalise, with Benbecula never really putting us under a great deal of pressure. Then with 15 minutes to go Benbecula got another goal from a real mixup at the back from us. This just left us with too much to do to turn the game around and although we got a goal back through Andrew MacSween I feel as though Benbecula deserved the win. We might of had more of the ball in the game but they always had an answer to our attack.

MOTM: There were a couple of standouts. Angie MacDougall in the first half for his biting challenges in the midfield, unfortunately he was forced off early in the second half due to injury. Calum MacDonald had a good game too, especially second half. However Ross Nicolson again gets the award for a fine display at the heart of the defence. He never put a foot wrong in either of our first two games.

Barra vs North Uist United

Tough start to the league campaign; Barra 4 North Uist United 0

We travelled to Barra on Saturday to take on the current league holders. Unfortunately due to work commitments and Covid issues we had a very much depleted squad.

First half was tough with Barra offering plenty threat going forward. We battled away at the back but unfortunately conceded a scrappy goal from a corner. The second goal followed shortly after that appeared to be offside however the referee was too far away to call the decision. From this point we had a mountain to climb! We did get up the park a few times, however our final decision and pass just seemed to be wrong/missing. Barra created a well worked goal close to half time with a tidy finish at the end of a good passing move. We went in 3-0 down at the break.

We regrouped at half time and put in a much more resilient and defiant display reducing the clear cut chances Barra we’re able to creat. We had a few efforts on goal and a few decent passages of play but nothing to truly trouble the Barra keeper. Unfortunately Barra did get another one after their right winger was left open and able to finish with ease.

The only real positives to take from the match was the youngsters that took part. Special mention to Stephen and Kieran Macisaac who both made their competitive debuts for the club. They both have a bright future ahead of them. Also Craig McClounnan played his first game in goals for us and had a decent game between the sticks.

MOTM: Ross Nicolson. As we offered little going forward I feel as though it has to go to the big man as without his efforts at the back it could of been a far worse scoreline.

Next game is Benbecula at home 7pm kick off! Hope to see a crowd there to cheer us on.
